Josh and Melanie are the kind of couple that work, completely. They’ve been in love for many years and everyone knew that they’d tie the knot eventually. It was just a matter of when he would propose. When Josh contacted me with his proposal idea, he knew that he wanted this one specific and magical bridge in City Park. He had the whole plan outlined. The biggest obstacle - how do we secure this gorgeous spot on a Friday night, on a holiday weekend, just before the sunset without giving away the surprise?
This is where their friends come in to play! We had a team of three extra people involved to help make sure it all went smoothly. We called it “Plan A.” We had a few back-up plans in place but Josh knew that this would be the spot. As far as Melanie knew, they were going out to a nice dinner at Ralph’s, but she would soon understand why they parked at the other side of the park and decided to walk over. My partner came out to help us because Josh knew that Melanie would recognize their friends in an instant. Especially friends that they’ve known since college.
So this is the set-up… one friend with me on a bridge parallel to the Magical Bridge, watching for their car and keeping an eye on the walk-way up. My partner on the side of the bridge they would approach first, trying to keep traffic on the bridge clear, and he’s inconspicuous too, since our soon-to-be couple wouldn’t recognize him. Friend three, on the other side of the bridge, out of sight, helping keep the bridge clear for the big moment too. We were keeping an eye on each other, watching for secret hand signals. I felt like we were in a heist movie! We were also part of a text chain getting minute-by-minute updates when we could. What they’d be wearing, when they left the house, when they parked, all of this was essential to pulling it off. It must have been difficult for Josh as the moment got closer!
When we saw them walking up everyone found their hiding spot. This next moment was all theirs.
I asked Melanie if she had any idea that the proposal was happening today as she wiped away a few happy tears and we geared up for a few more photos. She didn’t know but it made a few odd things about the week add up.
One of my favorite things that these two do together: Play on a Quidditch team. Any other Harry Potter fans reading???
